More than 1,200 teams from 312 Division I schools — including five programs from the University of Northern Iowa — have been recognized for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their sports in the most recent Academic Progress Rates.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,284, up by 79 from the previous academic year, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Of the teams recognized, 457 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 827 competed in women's sports. APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,188, marking an increase of 98 teams from last year.
UNI had five teams earn academic recognition from the NCAA – men's golf, women's golf, women's cross country, women's basketball and volleyball. These teams have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport.
"We are proud to once again have five of our programs recognized nationally for their achievements in their multiyear APR scores," UNI Director of Athletics David Harris said. "Our coaches, student-athletes and student services staff continue to do a great job working together to uphold the standard of academic excellence for our department. Our volleyball program is again deserving of special congratulations for earning its NCAA APR recognition for the 13th consecutive year. Coach Bobbi Petersen's program is a model of excellence and consistency both on and off the court."
For the past 13 years the NCAA has recognized teams in the top-10 percent of the Academic Progress Report and the UNI volleyball team has been on the list all 13 years.
In fact, the UNI volleyball team has had a perfect score of 1,000 in each of the 13 years. UNI volleyball is one of 85 programs in the nation to have earned the recognition in each of the 13 years teams have been honored.
It is the ninth top-10 honor for UNI women's cross country and eighth consecutive time on the list. UNI men's golf has earned the top-10 honor in seven straight years. UNI women's golf has been in the top-10 recognition six times. It is the second time that the UNI women's basketball team has earned the top-10 APR recognition – but the first time since 2004-05.
While many NCAA championships for the current academic year have yet to take place, seven national championship teams from this year have earned Public Recognition Awards: Notre Dame women's basketball; Penn State wrestling; UCLA beach volleyball and men's water polo; UConn field hockey; Vanderbilt bowling; and Villanova men's basketball. In addition, two squads that earned the award — Notre Dame men's fencing and Denver men's skiing — were part of title-winning teams in combined men's and women's championships.
"I applaud every program earning a Public Recognition Award this year for their commitment to going above and beyond to prepare students for life after college through academic achievement," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "To have nine national champions so far this year — including men's and women's basketball — be among those recognized illustrates that student-athletes succeed athletically and academically."
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year's release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (i.e., Football Bowl Subdivision and NCAA Football Championship Subdivision).
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
