Bunch, Roby Named to MVC's Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS -- The University of Northern Iowa softball team is represented by senior Brittney Roby and sophomore Sammey Bunch on the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete first team, as voted on by the league's softball sports information directors and announced by the league office today.
Roby (Knoxville, Iowa/Twin Cedars Bussey HS/DMACC) posted a 3.36 cumulative grade point average, while majoring in English teaching. She ranks as the No. 2-toughest hitter in the nation to strikeout. She had 182 at bats this season only three strikeouts. Roby batted .379 on the year and led the team in hits (69), doubles (12), stolen bases (11) and multi-hit games (22).
Bunch (Frankenstein, Missouri/Fatima HS) has a 3.49 cumulative grade point average in movement and exercise science. Bunch was tops on the squad in runs (30), triples (2), home runs (5) and extra-base hits (17). She hit .341 on the season. Bunch recorded 16 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI contests. She led the squad in MVC games only with 28 hits and 15 runs scored.
Eleven of the thirteen MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team members were also selected to the 2018 MVC Softball All-Conference Teams with six being on the All-Conference First Team and five on the Second Team. Maddy Vermejan of Southern Illinois, Sammey Bunch of UNI, Kaitlin Beason of Missouri State and Maria Schroeder from Bradley are four of the honorees that were also named to the MVC All-Defensive Team. Included on the First Team are the Valley's Most Valuable Player and Elite 17 Award winner, Mandi Roemmich (DU), as well as the MVC Defensive Player of the Year, Maddy Vermejan (SIU).
Missouri State placed three student-athletes on the first team, the most in the league. Tournament champion, Drake, as well as Bradley, UNI and Southern Illinois claimed two spots. Illinois State and Loyola earned one nod each. In all, seven conference schools are represented on the first team.
The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic Academic All-America® program. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's rounds or played at the MVC Championship.
The Scholar-Athlete Team was voted on by the league's golf sports information directors.
