TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – UNI track and field got a boost from the men in shot put, and Kassidy Sharp defended her title to repeat as high jump champion today.
Both the men's and women's teams were sitting in second place heading into the final day of competition set for Sunday. The men trail Indiana State by three points, while the women trail Illinois State by 27 points.
All six men competing in the shot put made it the final round. Together they scored 23 points with Keegan Tritle leading the pack. He took second with a throw of 59 feet, 11.25 inches. Isaac Holtz also earned All-MVC honors with a third place finish. Kyler Yodts, Tom Yezek and Darius King finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Billy Blaser was just edged out of the scoring range with a ninth-place finish.
Austin Heitland earned All-MVC honors with his second-place finish in the decathlon. A stadium record in the decathlon 400 yesterday helped give him a personal best for the year with 6,955 points.
Chase Van Sant led the trio of long jumpers that scored for the men. His leap of 23 feet, 2.75 inches took third and earned him All-MVC honors. Bryce Newcomb took seventh, and Cade Kirkpatrick was eighth.
Two Panthers placed in the men's high jump. Xavior Williams cleared 6 feet, 10.25 inches to take fourth. Cameron Catrall was seventh.
Ben Ahlrichs and Alex Jackson grabbed the final two scoring positions in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at seventh and eighth.
On the women's side, Sharp and Maria Gonzalez earned All-MVC honors with top-three finishes. Sharp cleared 5 feet, 9.25 inches. Gonzalez cleared 5 feet, 7 inches. Chaley Rath also scored points for the Panthers finishing seventh in high jump.
The women scored three times in the heptathlon with Brooke Lorenz (fourth), Lauren Frederick (seventh) and Erica Loussaert (eighth). Lorenz's 4,964 points was her best of the season.
Four of the five Panthers competing in the men's 400-meter dash earned a spot in tomorrow's finals. Evan Long, Bryce Newcomb, Sven Van den Bergh and Corey Hertz advanced.
Jacob Smith and JoJo Frost continue to be the favorites heading into the 400-meter hurdle finals.
All three 100-meter dash competitors advanced for the men. Isaiah Trousil, Tayshaun Cooper and Matt Turcotte advanced.
Connor Ham and Cole Phillips will compete in the 110-meter hurdles and Jordan Pingel advanced in the 800-meter run.
Brette Correy and Lyndsie Schinkel enter tomorrow's 800-meter run final with the first and fourth fastest times. Maddie Bell will compete in the 400-meter dash.
