DES MOINES, Iowa - The Illinois State Redbirds outlasted the University of Northern Iowa softball team in 10 innings in the opening round of the 2018 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, 4-3.

The Redbirds (21-32 overall) advance to take on the No. 3-seeded Southern Illinois on Friday. UNI's season is complete at 26-26 overall.

Illinois State scored first in the third inning with an unearned run.

UNI evened it up in the bottom half of the third on a bunt single to second by Brittney Krodinger that plated her sister, Courtney Krodinger from second. UNI could not add any more runs in the third despite having runners at second and third.

The Panthers threatened again in the fourth when the first two batters reached as Adara Opiola walked and Olivia Brooks singled. But the Redbirds did not allow the Panthers to take advantage of the scoring opportunity.

The Redbirds took a two-run advantage in the eighth on RBI singles from Riley Strandgard and Caitlyn Daly.

UNI looked down and out, but a two-strike, two-out, two-run home run by Ashley Chesser knotted the contest back up at 3-3.

Illinois State scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th when Strandgard led off with a home run to left field off of UNI reliever Emma Olejniczak.
