Smith Earns MVC Track Athlete of the Week Once Again

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – For the fourth-straight week, the University of Northern Iowa track and field program has earned a weekly Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week honor, as sophomore Jacob Smith was named the league's track athlete of the week.

The MVC weekly award is Smith's second of the season, after earning the same distinction on April 17. The Panthers have earned a weekly honor from the MVC every week of competition for the outdoor season so far. Overall, UNI has won seven weekly awards from the MVC in 2017-18, with Lauren Frederick (indoor), Brette Correy (indoor), Sarah Pate (indoor/outdoor), Anna Bentley (outdoor) and Smith (outdoor - twice) all earning honors this season.

Smith continued his stellar outdoor season over the weekend after placing fourth at the Drake Relays 400-meter hurdles. Smith's time of 50.94 was a personal best for the sophomore, while ranking first in the MVC and 12th in the NCAA West region. Smith also placed second in the 4x400 relay preliminaries at the Drake Relays.

Overall, Smith has won four events this season, while earning three runner-up showings. Among the sophomore's four wins, two have come in the 400-meter hurdles and one each in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

UP NEXT
The Panthers will compete at the Wisconsin Twilight on Friday, May 4 in Madison, Wisconsin, before closing out the outdoor slate at the MVC Outdoor Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana on May 11-13.
