Panthers' Offense Halted in Series Opener

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Panthers suffered a shutout loss in the series opener Saturday, against the Valparaiso Crusaders.
Northern Iowa Panthers vs. Missouri State Bears | Final Score – L, 2-0
Brooke Craig looked dominant in the first four innings of her start, Saturday, against the Crusaders. Craig ran into some trouble in the fifth inning, after a dropped ball by the Panthers' infield. Two runs came into score in the fifth, which were the sole runs of the game for Valparaiso.
Craig walked one batter and allowed three hits in six innings of work. The junior righty also struck out three, while allowing two runs, both of which were unearned. The loss was Craig's sixth of the season, bring her pitching record to 9-6 on the season.
The offense was shutdown for the entirety of the game by Valparaiso pitching, mustering only three hits while walking once. The UNI offense was able to avoid a lot of strikeouts (1) but could not find any gaps in the defense in the series opener.
Sammey Bunch, Kennedy Bailey, and Courtney Krodinger had the three hits for the Panthers on the day. Adara Opiola reached on a base on balls, and Bailey was also hit by a pitch.
The shutout loss was the second for UNI on the season, with the first coming in the Easton Bama Bash against Florida State.
UP NEXT –
The Panthers will play a noon doubleheader on Sunday against the Valparaiso Crusaders, finishing off the three-game series between the two teams.
