Maddie Bertsch - Golf
Bertsch recorded three top-10 finishes and was named the Missouri Valley Conference's co-women's golfer of the week in early March. Bertsch posted a career-low round of 68 in the final round of the Jackrabbit Invitational held at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bertsch's final round 68 surged her into a tie for fifth in the overall standings. Bertsch followed that up with a tie for ninth at the Pizza Hut Pat Lady Thunderbird Invitational held March 15-16 in St. George, Utah. Bertsch helped lead the Panther women's golf team to the program's first outright championship since 2012 at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Shootout at the Trophy Club Golf Course in Trophy, Texas. Bertsch tied for fourth overall after carding rounds of 75, 79 and 74 in the three-day event. Bertsch leads the team in scoring this year at 77.05 per round. Maddie is a marketing: sales management major and has been a consistent member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.Â
Brooke Craig - Softball
Craig led the UNI pitching staff with 6-3 record and a 1.95 earned run average in the month of March. She tossed a two-hit shutout in a 9-0 win North Carolina A&T (March 4). She pitched a three-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over Green Bay (March 10). Craig went six innings and gave up four hits but did not allow a run in a 5-0 win over Missouri State (March 30). Brooke is an elementary education major and is a consistent member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. She has also been on the Dean's List and had one or more semesters with a 4.0 GPA.
Jacob Holschlag - Wrestling
Holschlag entered the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships unseeded and finished as an All-American with a fifth-place finish at 197 pounds. Holschlag earned his second automatic bid to nationals with a fourth-place finish in the 197-pound weight class at the Big 12 Championships. Holschlag was bumped into the consolations of the national tournament after a first-round loss to No. 6 Willie Miklus of Missouri. He knocked off four wrestlers ranked in the top 25, including a win over Miklus in a second meeting at the tournament. He sealed his fifth-place win by pinning the No. 2 seed Ben Darmstadt of Cornell in the first period. Holschlag also earned Big 12 academic honors with a spot on the second team. He finished the season with a 23-12 record. He is a sophomore biology major from La Porte City, Iowa. He has been a consistent member on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Taylor Lujan - Wrestling
Lujan became the first Panther to earn a Big 12 Championship title since UNI joined the conference for the 2018 season. Lujan plowed through the 174-pound weight class. He earned a tech fall over NDSU's Dylan Urbach and two top-15 wins with decisions over No. 10 David Kocer and No. 13 Jacobe Smith. The sophomore returned to the NCAA championships for the second year, where he took down his eighth top-20 opponent. Trailing No. 12 Ethan Ramos for much of the match, Lujan flipped Ramos and the score with just 15 seconds left. Lujan went on to win 16-12 to advance to the quarterfinals. Taylor is a third-year technology management major.
