CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – After a sensational career at the University of Northern Iowa, former Panther wideout Daurice Fountain was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts with the 159th pick in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft on Saturday.
With the pick, Fountain becomes UNI's 19th player selected in the NFL Draft and sixth under head coach Mark Farley. Fountain is UNI's first draftee since Deiondre' Hall was taken by the Chicago Bears with the 127th pick in the fourth round of 2016's draft.
Fountain is the first Panther receiver to be drafted since Eddie Berlin in 2001 by the Tennessee Titans. Fountain also becomes the third UNI player to be drafted with the 159th pick, joining two successful former pros in Berlin (2001) and Bryce Paup (1990).
Fountain's rise up the draft board was in part to his performance at the East-West Shrine Game, where he became the first MVFC player to earn MVP honors for the game after hauling in three catches for 61 yards and 40 yards on punt returns. Fountain continued to turn heads at UNI's Pro Day, after leaping out of the building for a 42.5-inch vertical, which is the highest of any draftee in 2018.
Fountain, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, finished his Panther career as just the sixth player in UNI history to rank in the Top-10 for catches (150), yards (2,077) and touchdowns (23). In 2017, Fountain snagged 66 catches, while racking up 943 yards and 12 scores. His 12 touchdown receptions rank as the fifth-most in a season at UNI, while his 66 catches rank as the ninth-most in a year.
