CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa football team held its Spring Game on Friday night, with the Panthers showcasing their future in front of an excited and electric crowd at the UNI-Dome.
Redshirt freshman Jacob Keller led the team with 117 passing yards on the day, after connecting on 11 of 21 pass attempts. The quarterback also led the team in rushing with 35 yards on seven carries.
UNI's John Sullivan also looked impressive under center, after throwing for 95 yards on Friday night and completing six of his nine attempts. The redshirt freshman connected on a 17-yard fade to Kurt Trumm in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for UNI on the night. Colton Howell also had an efficient day with 88 yards on 9-16 passing, while also picking up 13 yards on three carries.
Junior running back Martavian Hall scored the game's first score after a 1-yard push to pay dirt. The Des Monies native carried the ball five times for 28 yards on Friday. The other nine points came from the special teams, as Sam Drysdale connected on 46 and 33-yard field goals, while Austin Errthum made a 51-yarder before the half.
The receiving core turned in a highlight-filled day as well, with redshirt freshman Terrell Carrey earning four catches and racking up 63 yards. Freshman Sam Holtzman had two catches with 61 yards, thanks to his big gain of 55 yards to set up a touchdown in the second half.
On the defensive side, defensive backs Isaiah Nimmers and Austin Evans led the team with tackles after each collecting five on the night. Defensive end Seth Thomas earned four tackles, while earning one sack and a pass break up. Defensive back Roosevelt Lawrence also earned four tackles and a sack, while breaking up two passes.
The 2018 Panthers will return 26 players who made starts on offense and defense for UNI in 2017. Last year's squad earned an 8-5 record and defeated three Top-10 foes on its way to the program's 19th FCS Playoff berth. The Panthers also succeeded on the postseason award's stage, after seven different players earned All-American honors which was the most since 2007.
