CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – After posting his fourth win of the outdoor season last week, University of Northern Iowa track and field sophomore Jacob Smith was named the Missouri Valley Conference Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
The MVC weekly honor is the first for Smith at UNI, while the laurel is the fifth for the Panthers overall this season with Lauren Frederick, Brette Correy and Sarah Pate all claiming the award during the indoor season and Anna Bentley winning most recently in the outdoor season.
Smith matched his personal-best time of 51.47 in the 400-hurdle to earn a win at the Musco Twilight in Iowa City last week. Smith also finished runner-up in the 4x400 relay, just missing out on his second win of the season in that event.
Smith's time in the 400-hurdle currently ranks first overall in the MVC and 17th in the NCAA West region. The 4x400 time of 3:08.35 last week also ranks first in the conference, while it sits 14th overall in the region.
Overall, UNI won seven events at the Musco Twilight, as the Panthers posted another solid outing to continue the outdoor season.
