
UNI Softball Heads South to Kansas

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team travels to Lawrence, Kansas to play in the Jayhawk Invitational, which will be the final tournament for UNI before MVC play begins.
The Panthers, enter the tournament with a 13-7 record, and will take on Nebraska (11:00 a.m. CT) and Kansas (4:30 p.m. CT) on Friday. The matchups for UNI on Saturday will be UW-Green Bay (9:00 a.m. CT) and UMKC (4:30 p.m. CT). The Panthers close out the Jayhawk Invitational with a Sunday morning game against Tulsa (9:00 a.m. CT).
The Nebraska Cornhuskers enter play with an 11-7 record. In 2017, the Cornhuskers finished 30-30 (13-10 B10), and lost in their opening game of the Big 10 Conference Tournament. Quinnipiac struggled away from home in 2017, with an 11-23 record on the road or in a neutral setting. The Panthers have struggled against Nebraska in the all-time series, with a 4-20 record against the Cornhuskers.
Entering their own tournament, the Jayhawks have gotten off to a hot start in the 2018 season. Kansas is 16-3 to begin the season, and is 10-1 in the last 11 games. The Jayhawks finished 24-28 (3-14 B12) in 2017, and did not participate in their conference tournament. UNI is 6-4 against Kansas in the all-time series.
For the second time this season, the Panthers will matchup with the UW-Green Bay Phoenix. UNI beat the Phoenix 5-2 in the second game of the season for the Panthers. UW-Green Bay enters the tournament with a 1-9 record. The only win of the season for the Phoenix came against the UMKC Roos in the UNI-Dome Classic, earlier this year. UNI is now 21-5 all-time against UW-Green Bay.
The game between UNI and UMKC will serve as a rematch for the two teams, as the Roos beat the Panthers 4-3 in the UNI-Dome Classic. UMKC enters the weekend with a 4-11 record, and has lost seven of its last eight games. The Panthers have the advantage in the all-time series between the two teams, with a 15-2 record against the Roos.
UNI will matchup with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the final game of the Jayhawk Invitational on Sunday. Tulsa comes into the weekend with a 12-7 record, and the Golden Hurricane are riding a seven-game winning streak. The Panthers are 11-7 all-time against Tulsa, and will have a chance to further their lead in the series on Sunday.
Following the Jayhawk Invitational, the Panthers open up MVC play on the road against the Bradley Braves in Peoria, Illinois.
