CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – University of Northern Iowa head football coach Mark Farley announced the hiring of Ryan Clanton on Tuesday, filling the position of offensive line coach for the Panthers.
Clanton comes to UNI from Ventura College (California), spending four seasons with the Pirates as the offensive coordinator as well as coaching the offensive line and serving as the run game coordinator.
Clanton brings an impressive resume as a player and young coach to Cedar Falls, after directing one of the state's best offensive lines for the past four seasons, including record-setting seasons at VC in 2015 and 2016. VC's offense set records in total offense, passing yards and passing touchdowns under Clanton's guidance.
Over his four years at VC, 19 out of 20 offensive linemen under his tutelage earned all-conference selections, with four earning All-American status. Clanton was named the 2016 Assistant Coach of the Year for all VC sports, after his outstanding efforts on the football staff.
Prior to VC, Clanton spent the 2013 season coaching the offensive and defensive lines at his high school alma mater, Bakersfield Christian. Clanton helped lead the Eagles to Southern Section and CIF titles before joining the VC staff.
Outside of his official coaching duties, Clanton has also worked with youth at the Carr Elite Football Camps, spearheaded by Derek and David Carr, in Bakersfield, California since 2013. Additionally, Clanton has been a guest speaker at numerous clinics, including most recently the American Football Coaches Association in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Glazier Clinic in Los Angeles, California.
Clanton is a product of Bakersfield Christian High School, where he helped lead coach Doug Barnett's team to the Valley Championship as a senior. He attended City College of San Francisco where he played for the Rams in 2008 and 2009, earning Junior College All-American honors on the offensive line for head coach George Rush.
Clanton accepted a full-ride scholarship to the University of Oregon, where he played left tackle, left guard and right guard on the Duck's offensive line for coach Chip Kelly. He spent three seasons in Eugene, including a redshirt year in 2010, and during that time the Ducks played in the 2011 BCS National Championship, won the 2012 Rose Bowl and won the 2013 Fiesta Bowl. Clanton was a team captain his senior season and was invited to NFL training camps, working with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers.
A native of Bakersfield, California, Clanton graduated from the University of Oregon in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in economics and society. Clanton also holds an associate's degree from City College of San Francisco.
