CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Missouri Valley Conference announced its 10 student-athlete winners for the State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award on Tuesday, with women's basketball sophomore Rose Simon-Ressler representing the University of Northern Iowa.
"It's truly an honor to receive this award," Simon-Ressler said. "I've been blessed with incredible opportunities here at UNI and I would not want to represent any other university or community."
This year's Winter honorees include Donte Thomas, Bradley, Men's Basketball; Paige Greiner, Drake, Women's Basketball; Blake Simmons, Evansville, Men's Basketball; Marie Priest, Illinois State, Gymnastics; Mykenzie Kostka, Indiana State, Women's Swimming & Diving; Clayton Custer, Loyola, Men's Basketball; Chris Heye, Missouri State, Men's Swimming & Diving; Rose Simon-Ressler, Northern Iowa, Women's Basketball; Rachel Hauer, Southern Illinois, Women's Swimming & Diving; Dani Franklin, Valparaiso, Women's Basketball.
In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award honorees.
"Giving back is the least I can do with the gifts I have," Simon-Ressler said. "I find great pleasure and purpose in making a positive impact on people's lives. It helps to remind me that life is bigger than just basketball."
UNI's Simon-Ressler, who owns a 3.73 GPA in health promotion with a minor in coaching, has earned a spot on the Dean's List for the past five semesters while also claiming a spot on the MVC Honor Roll.
The Epworth, Iowa native has also built a lengthy resume volunteering with the community, helping with the Salvation Army, Boys' and Girls' Club, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, Junior Panther Night, Panther Reading Program, Panther Caravan and Kids' Clinic to name a few. Rose-Simon Ressler also serves as a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership
In 2017-18, Simon-Ressler started 25 games for UNI, averaging 6.2 points per contest. The sophomore was just one of three Panthers to record a double-double this season, picking up two in back-to-back games against Evansville (2/11) and Drake (2/16).
