CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball squad will begin its march toward consecutive Missouri Valley Conference titles, at home in the UNI-Dome Classic as the Panthers play host to the event Feb. 9-11.
Last year, UNI finished 33-19 (20-6 MVC) and captured the regular season MVC title before losing in a tight one-run game to Southern Illinois in the MVC tournament title game.
For the fourth straight season, the Panthers will open up their regular season slate in the UNI-Dome, where they have gone 11-6 in the past three UNI-Dome Classics. The Panthers enter the 2018 season third in the MVC softball preseason poll, and have two players on the 2018 softball preseason all-MVC team. Jaclyn Spencer at pitcher and Sammey Bunch at shortstop garnered the preseason accolades for UNI.
UNI will be joined by Drake, Southeast Missouri State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, South Dakota State and UMKC at the 2018 UNI-Dome Classic.
Drake finished the 2017 season with a 28-27 (11-15 MVC) record and was ousted in the first game of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. The Bulldogs enter the 2018 season fourth in the MVC Softball pre-season poll, receiving two first-place votes. The Panthers will not play the Bulldogs during the UNI-Dome Classic, but instead will meet Apr. 17 in Cedar Falls for a doubleheader, and Apr. 24 in Des Moines.
Southeast Missouri State finished 23-27 (8-14 OVC) in 2017, and did not participate in the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference tournament. The Redhawks will play the Panthers twice during the Classic, on Friday, Feb. 9th and Saturday, Feb. 10th. In past matchups, UNI has gone 5-8 against Southeast Missouri State.
Wisconsin-Green Bay endured a tough 2017 season, going 4-31 (3-18 HL). The Panthers will take on the Phoenix on Friday, Feb. 9th. UNI owns a 13-4 series advantage over Wisconsin-Green Bay in past matchups.
South Dakota State will go up against UNI on Saturday, Feb. 10th. The Jackrabbits went 19-35 (4-12 SL) in 2017 and were bounced from the Summit League conference tournament after losing to Western Illinois in the first game. In past matchups between SDSU and the Panthers, UNI owns a 12-2 advantage over the Jackrabbits.
UMKC will play UNI in the final game of the 2018 UNI-Dome Classic, closing out the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 11th. The Roos are coming off a 17-38 (5-10 WAC) season, which ended with a 15-3 loss in the 2017 WAC Softball Tournament. The Panthers have won 14 of 15 matchups in the series between UNI and UMKC.
