CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team (4-1) fell short in its comeback attempt against the Missouri-Kansas City Roos (2-3) in the final game of the UNI-Dome Classic on Sunday evening.
Junior pitcher Brooke Craig labored through her two innings of work against the Roos, giving up five hits and walking three batters. UMKC started off the game with a single up the middle, and after two walks by Craig, the Roos had the bases loaded with no outs. Craig was able to work out of the jam, giving up only a sacrifice fly, to hold the Roos to one run in the top of the 1st.
The Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the 1st inning but failed to cash in with any runs after a Brittney Krodinger infield fly, and Claire Dudek fielder's choice out at second base.
After striking out the first batter in the top of the 2nd inning, Craig struggled to record two more outs, giving up four hits and three runs in the inning while walking a batter. Ashley Chesser threw out a UMKC runner attempting to steal third base, to end the inning.
Junior Courtney Krodinger came into the game in relief of Craig and pitched three scoreless innings while also recording her first collegiate strikeout. C. Krodinger faced 12 batters in her limited work, getting five to flyout and three to groundout. Emma Olejniczak, making her second career appearance on the mound, pitched two scoreless innings while striking out a batter. The only hitter to reach against Olejniczak was on a walk.
The Panthers' offense was held scoreless until the 3rd inning, when Bunch reached on a hit by pitch and Brittney Roby moved her to third by way of an error committed by the Roos' second baseman. A B. Krodinger sac fly brought home the first run of the game for UNI.
A sac fly to right field off the bat of Abby Downs, and a Kennedy Bailey liner up the middle brought in two more runs for the Panthers in the 4th inning. UNI would fail to score the rest of the game, after being held hitless the final three and two-thirds inning by UMKC pitcher Olivia Fluehr.
The Panthers return to action Feb. 16-18, where they will take part in the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom tourney in Orlando, FL.
