CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Junior Brooke Craig, making her first career start, dominated the Green Bay Phoenix in a 5-2 win for the Panthers on Friday evening.
After a rough first inning, Craig was able to settle down and keep the Panthers in a position to win. Craig got the starting nod for the first time in her collegiate career and did not disappoint. Going the distance, Craig set down four batters on strikeouts, doubling her career total from the previous two seasons.
Brittney Roby had an excellent day at the plate, racking up three hits and three RBI to lead to UNI offense. Shortstop Sammey Bunch joined Roby with three hits, and drove a runner in. The decisive inning in the game was the bottom of the fifth when the Panthers plated runs on a Kennedy Bailey double down the left field line, and a Bunch opposite field line drive.
With the win over the Phoenix on Friday, the Panthers were able to extend their lead in the all-time series, to 14-4 in favor of UNI. Green Bay would go on to lose 11-0 in its second game of the day, against the Drake Bulldogs. The Phoenix have lost five games in a row, and 17 of their last 19 games have ended in defeat. Green Bay will look to change its luck on Saturday against UMKC.
The Panthers will take on the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Saturday, as the UNI-Dome Classic carries on.
HIGHLIGHT PERFORMANCE(S):
Offensive: Brittney Roby tied for the team lead in hit with (3) against the Phoenix and drove in three runners. A career day at the plate for Roby leads to her being the offensive highlight performer.
Defensive: The matchup between the Phoenix and Panthers marked the second consecutive game that Kennedy Bailey registered double-digit putouts without an error. Bailey's consistency with the glove at first base leads to her being the defensive player of the game.
