DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake Bulldogs won first time in eight tries against the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball squad on Saturday in the Knapp Center, 71-64.

Drake (14-3 overall, 8-6 MVC) opened the game with a 9-0 run and closed the first half with a 7-0 spurt. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Nick McGlynn with 17 points and Reed Timmer with 15 points. C.J. Rivers added 12 points for the Bulldogs.

UNI (12-14 overall, 4-10 MVC) got 17 points off the bench from junior guard Wyatt Lohaus and the fifth career double-double from Bennett Koch. Koch tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers.

Panther guard Tywhon PIckford set the UNI freshman single-season rebounding record in the contest. Pickford has recorded 209 rebounds this season. Pickford bested the previous mark of 205 set by Eric Coleman in the 2004-05 season. Pickford ranks No. 10 among MVC freshmen single-season rebounders.

The Bulldogs scored the first nine points of the game in the opening 3:31. UNI whittled the lead away throughout the first half and eventually knotted the game at 28-28 on a three-pointer from sophomore Spencer Haldeman with 1:43 left in the first half. However, the Bulldogs then closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 35-28 lead into the intermission.

Drake opened up a 10-point advantage at 45-35 with 14:41 left in the game on a pair of free throws from Timmer. UNI then cut the lead to two points at 48-46 on a jumper from senior Hunter Rhodes with 9:10 on the clock. Drake responded with a six-point spurt to make it an eight-point lead at 54-46 with 7:11 left.

A layup from sophomore Luke McDonnell followed by a steal and layup from sophomore Isaiah Brown pulled the Panthers to within five points at 69-64 with :22.1 remaining. But the Panthers could get no closer and fell, 71-64.

UNI will return home to the McLeod Center to take on the Evansville Purple Aces on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
