Loyola Surges Late Against UNI, 56-50

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Loyola Ramblers closed on an 11-2 run to score a 56-50 win over the University of Northern Iowa Panther men's basketball team on Sunday in the McLeod Center.
Loyola (12-4 overall, 2-2 MVC) trailed UNI (8-8 overall, 0-4 MVC) by three after Panther freshman Tywhon Pickford banked in a three-pointer from the top of the key with 4:29 left in the game. The Ramblers took the lead on a three-pointer by Ben Richardson with 3:03 left in the game at 50-48. Two made free throws from Loyola's Cameron Krutwig with 2:23 remaining upped the Rambler advantage to four at 52-48.
UNI's Wyatt Lohaus nailed a jumper in the lane to trim it back to two with 1:53 left. Loyola's Clayton Custer missed a layup on its next possession and UNI had a chance to tie. But an errant pass from senior Bennett Koch was intercepted by Donte Ingram. Ingram then took the steal to the other end and converted a layup while getting fouled. Ingram missed the free throw and Pickford grabbed the errant shot. UNI's Spencer Haldeman missed a look from 3-point range with 1:02 left.
Loyola's Krutwig missed a jumper at the shot clock buzzer and Pickford rebounded the miss to give UNI another shot. Lohaus drove the lane for a layup, but it was blocked by Loyola's Lucas Williamson. Ingram made one of two at the line to give Loyola a 55-50 lead with :18.9 left. UNI sophomore Juwan McCloud drove the lane and missed with a jumper before Loyola closed out the game with another free throw from Williamson to give the visitors a 56-50 victory.
UNI held a pair of five-point leads in the first half and had a 26-23 advantage at the break.
UNI's Koch set a career high with five blocks and he led the Panthers in scoring with 17 points. Koch also added nine rebounds and two assists.
Pickford notched his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds against the Ramblers.
Custer was the lone Rambler in double-figure scoring with 11 points. Custer made three of his final four three-point shots in the game - all of which came in the second half.
UNI will be back in action on Wednesday in Terre Haute, Indiana, when the Panthers take on the Indiana State Sycamores. Tip is set for 6 p.m. (CT) at the Hulman Center.
