Salukis Defeat Panthers, 64-53

CARBONDALE, Illinois – The Southern Illinois Salukis scored their first season sweep since 2002-03 over the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team on Sunday at SIU Arena.
SIU (12-9 overall, 4-4 MVC) had four players reach double-figure scoring led by Sean Lloyd's 15 points. Armon Fletcher and Marcus Bentley each chipped in with 12 points and Kavion Pippen notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
UNI (10-10 overall, 2-6 MVC) got a team-high 15 points off the bench from junior guard Wyatt Lohaus. Lohaus drained four three-pointers and was 5-of-9 from the field. Klint Carlson and Isaiah Brown each scored 10 points. Brown added a team-best seven rebounds.
UNI's only lead of the game came at 3-2 when Brown drained a triple with 17:23 to play in the first half. The game's only tie came at 7-7 after a three-pointer from Carlson with 14:23 left in the opening half.
SIU's Bartley and Lloyd drained back-to-back triples to open up a six-point lead at 13-7. SIU's largest lead in the first half was six and the home squad led by four at the break, 25-21.
UNI freshman Austin Phyfe sank a pair of free throws to open the scoring in the second half that pulled the Panthers to within two at 25-23.
After SIU had pushed the margin to nine at 41-32, UNI freshman Tywhon Pickford scored his only basket of the game and sank a free throw with 11:36 left to play. But the Salukis responded with a 12-1 run to open up a 53-36 lead with 6:48 remaining.
UNI made a late push and cut the margin to eight at 54-46 with 3:21 on the clock. The Panthers used a 10-1 run that included a pair of three-pointers from Lohaus.
But again the Salukis ran off six straight points and pushed the lead back to double-digits where it stayed. SIU finished off the victory, 64-53.
The Panthers will be back in action Wednesday at home against the Illinois State Redbirds. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
NOTES: UNI has made at least one three-pointer in 581 straight games – the longest active streak in the Missouri Valley Conference … UNI's 2-6 start in the MVC matches the Panthers mark to begin the 2015-16 league season.
