A Letter From Athletics Director David Harris

Panther Family,
Welcome back to another year of Panther athletics! Thank you for your support of our programs during the 2016-17 competition year. Because of that support, we had our highest finish in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All Sports Standings in the past 16 years. We were able to capture conference championships in women's cross country, wrestling and softball. We also saw a pair of our women's programs (volleyball and women's basketball) earn at-large bids into their respective NCAA Tournaments. Academically, our women's swimming & diving squad ranked No. 2 in the nation with a 3.71 cumulative GPA and our women's basketball team ranked No. 8 in the nation with a 3.609 cumulative GPA. Overall, our student-athletes compiled a higher semester GPA than the student body for the 16th consecutive semester while completing over 2,800 hours of community service. There is a lot to be proud of regarding Panther athletics and we look to build on these successes as we move forward together.
We're off to a great start for the 2017-18 competition season. The Panther soccer team is currently undefeated and our volleyball team is currently just outside the top 25 teams in the nation after defeating two top-20 teams. Our defending MVC women's cross country team opened the season last weekend with five student-athletes finishing in the top 25 runners at the Iowa invite and our football team is ready to kick off its home season on Saturday with Cal Poly coming to the UNI-Dome for the first game on our new AstroTurf surface. This is always a very exciting time of the year for me as I look forward to supporting our Panthers as well as engaging with so many of you who support us throughout the year.
This year I'm going to be taking opportunities to engage you on a more personal level. I'll be using letters, Twitter chats, and Facebook Live sessions to answer your questions and address any concerns. It is important to our department that we continue to strengthen our connections to our supporters through multiple avenues. Our first Facebook Live will be Thurs., Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. We will keep you informed as these opportunities arise so please take the time to join me with your questions.
Finally, it is extremely important to the success of our programs that we create a great home atmosphere for our student athletes. You can help us by being at our events. We need you in the stands supporting us at every game, match and meet. We will be working this year to ensure when you are attending a UNI event that you have a top-notch experience. If you ever have any suggestions on ways that we can improve the game day experience then please feel free to contact us.
Thank you again for supporting UNI athletics and I hope to see you at a game soon.
Go Panthers!
