Davison Honored as Dr. Charlotte West Award Winner

ST. LOUIS -- Angie Davison of the University of Northern Iowa and Reed Fischer of Drake University have been selected as the female and male recipients, respectively, of the Missouri Valley Conference's Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award, Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin has announced. The Missouri Valley Conference Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee selected Davison and Fischer from a field of league student-athletes who met the award criteria, including academic achievement, athletics excellence and service and leadership.
Davison served as a team captain during the 2016-17 season, helping UNI earn an at-large NCAA Tournament berth. A native of Maple Grove, Minnesota., she was named to the WBCA Allstate Good Works Team for her contributions to the community and has been a pillar in the classroom, earning a spot on the MVC Honor Roll four years in a row. This past season, she started all 33 games and averaged 24.1 minutes, 5.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
She has been active in the Cedar Valley since stepping foot on campus as a freshman. She is heavily involved with UNI-CUE, a program designed to assist other students with their learning and studying habits, proving her passion for teaching and helping others. She also works closely with The Job Foundation that teaches underprivileged youth the value of financial education as well as the benefits of a good education. She has also been a member of the UNI Fellowship of Christian Athletes since stepping on campus. She mentors other female student-athletes once a week along with assisting in weekly bible studies on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Davison is an elementary and middle level education major with a cumulative 3.98 GPA.
Fischer, a native of Minnetonka, Minnesota., is a four-time MVC Champion this season claiming MVC titles in cross country, sweeping the 3,000 and 5,000 meters during the indoor season and most recently claiming the 10,000-meter title. He is a three-time NCAA qualifier, a three-time all-region selection and a seven-time All-MVC selection. Fischer has set school records this season in the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meters as well as the outdoor 5,000 meters. His record setting performance in setting the outdoor 5,000 meters came at the Drake Relays to shatter the 39-year-old record and run the fastest 5,000 meters the Relays since 1988. He also owns the second fastest 10,000-meter time in program history.
Academically, Fischer was the MVC Cross Country Elite 18 Award winner and a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree while garnering multiple USTFCCCA All-Academic accolades. An English/public relations major with a 3.81 grade point average, Fischer has been nominated for the Oreon E. Scott Award, given to the top senior at Drake University. He has collected a total of six MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selections and been named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week 10 times in his career.
The first-ever recipient of the Honda Award of Merit in 1996 for outstanding achievement in women's collegiate athletics, Dr. Charlotte West was a driving force for more than 40 years in the area of advancement of women's sports. On June 30, 1998, she retired from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, after serving in the capacities of head coach, associate athletics director, interim athletics director and senior woman administrator during her 41 years with the Missouri Valley Conference-member institution. West coached five women's sports from 1957-75 and, in 1982, was among the first group of women inducted into the SIUC Athletics Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. SIU named its softball stadium after West in 2003 and the NCAA named a room in its new national office building in Indianapolis in West's honor in 2012.
During her tenure at SIUC, she became the first female member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and later served on the organization's board of directors. West was also a president of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). In 1991, she was presented with the Administrator of the Year Award by the National Association of Collegiate Women Administrators. West also received the Administrator of the Year Award, given by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
