Â
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI track and field sprinter Brandon Carnes enters this week's national championship seeded fifth in the 100-meter dash time.
Â
This will be Carnes' third trip to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I National Track and Field Championship set for June 7-10.
Â
Carnes ran a winded-aided 9.97-second 100-meter dash at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in May. His 100-meter time without the wind aid (10.06 seconds) ties him for seventh among all American competitors' wind legal times this year. The time also set a conference record.
Â
Carnes wrapped up his collegiate career with 16 MVC titles. He never lost to a conference competitor in the 100-meter or 200-meter dashes.
Â
He qualified all four years for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. He holds the UNI and conference records in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. In the first rounds of the 200-meter dash at the 2017 NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round, he crushed the 200-meter conference record set 33 years ago. He ran a wind-legal time of 20.25 seconds to beat Indiana State's Dwight Williams' time of 20.36 set in 1984.
Â
He also owns the indoor records for the 60-meter dash at the school and conference levels and the school record for the indoor 200-meter dash.
Â
He was the first Panther to win both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes at the MVC indoor championship. He also made history in the conference by being:
- The only four-time 60-meter champion
- Just one of three sprinters to win four indoor 200-meter dash titles
- Just one of two sprinters to win four outdoor 100-meter dash titles
- Just one of three sprinters to win four outdoor 200-meter dash titles
He was named the MVC Most Valuable Athlete at the:
- 2015 outdoor championships
- 2014 indoor championships
He was named the MVC Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete:
- 2017 outdoor championships
- 2017 indoor championships
- 2016 outdoor championships
- 2016 indoor championships
