AUSTIN, Texas – Brandon Carnes earned a spot at the Division I NCAA Track and Field Championships in the 100-meter dash and set a 200-meter dash record to advance to quarterfinals that run Saturday.

Carnes won his 200-meter dash heat in 20.25 seconds with 1.7 m/s wind aid to break his own school record set earlier this year (20.50 seconds). The time also sets a new conference standing, breaking the 20.36-second record set by Dwight Williams of Indiana State in 1984.

Carnes' 10.02 second 100-meter time with a 3.1 m/s wind aid was good enough for fourth place overall at today's NCAA West Preliminary and qualifying him for the next rounds in Eugene, Oregon.

Jon Rus advanced to the 100-meter hurdle quarterfinals set for tomorrow. He was third in his heat with a time of 14.03. Teammate Daurice Fountain finished 40^th in 14.68 seconds.

Brad Walski finished well ahead of his 34^th seeding in the shot put. He threw 56 feet, 7.25 inches to take 28th.

Kassidy Sharp jumped 5 feet, 6.5 inches in the high jump to finish 36^th. The final qualifying jump for the NCAA championships was 5 feet, 8.5 inches.

Hope Koerperich finished 42nd in the discus with a throw of 155 feet, 6 inches.

QUALIFYING FOR EUGENE
The top-12 athletes from each event at the regional will qualify for the NCAA Championships. The top three finishers in each quarterfinal individual running event and the next three times will qualify for Eugene, Oregon, set for June 7-10.
