Buchanan, Bunch Win MVC Honors

Alyssa Buchanan has been named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week and Sammey Bunch has been named Newcomer of the week, as announced by the league on Monday.

Alyssa Buchanan helped the Panthers in and out of the pitching circle this past week. She opened the week against Drake and pitched a complete game three-hitter while striking out nine in the win. She went 2-for-3 at the plate with two hits, scored a run and tallied an RBI. In another mid-week contest against Iowa State, Buchanan went 1-for-1 with a double, RBI, run scored and drew a walk. She tossed 2/3 of an inning against the Cyclones and struck out two batters.

Buchanan then helped the Panthers to a 9-7 win over Wichita State in the opening game of a doubleheader by going 2-for-2 at the plate and drawing a walk. She drew the start in the second game of the doubleheader and went the distance improving to 12-2 on the season. She scattered four hits and struck out six while allowing only a single run in a 5-1 triumph over the Shockers. At the plate, Buchanan went 1-for-3 and finished the week batting .667 (6-for-9) and boasted a .778 slugging percentage. In her three pitching appearances, Buchanan pitched 14 2/3 innings and struck out 17. She allowed only seven hits and three runs tallying a 1.43 ERA in earning two victories.

The Fishers, Indiana native currently leads the Panthers with a 12-2 record an 1.54 ERA for the season.

Sammey Bunch wrapped up the week of four games by hitting .462 with a 1.231 slugging percentage. She totaled six hits, eight RBI, three runs, two doubles, a triple and two home runs. She began the week going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple in a UNI victory over Drake. Bunch got the weekend started with a grand slam in leading UNI to a 9-7 win over Wichita State. Bunch went 2-for-4 with five RBI in the opening game of a doubleheader vs. the Shockers. Bunch then helped the Panthers to a sweep of the Shockers by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and another home run.

Bunch, from Bonnots Mill, Missouri, leads the Panthers in runs scored (38), doubles (11) and stolen bases (11). Bunch is currently batting .324 with a .596 slugging percentage.

Buchanan and Bunch will lead UNI in a three-game series against Illinois State in Normal, Illinois, where they look to claim the conference regular season title. Saturday May 6 will be a doubleheader at noon and 2:30 p.m., while Sunday May 7 will be a single game at 11 a.m.
