Panthers Sweep Wichita State on Senior Day

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team scored two wins over Wichita State in a doubleheader Saturday.
The Panthers grabbed game one, 9-7, with the assistance of a Sammey Bunch grand slam. UNI then captured game two, 5-2.
UNI is 29-18 overall and 17-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Wichita State is 28-19 overall and 13-9 in conference play.
GAME ONE
UNI starting pitcher Jaclyn Spencer held the Shockers to only one hit in the first three innings.
Brittney Roby started the Panther offense in the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line. Macey Wolfe would reach first on an error from Wichita State's second baseman. Anna Varriano walked to load the bases with two out. Jaclyn Spencer would reach first on a fielder's choice that scored Roby to give UNI a 1-0 lead. Bunch followed with a grand slam to open up a 5-0 cushion for the Panthers.
The Panthers scored another run in the bottom of the third. Bailey reached again on a Wichita State error and would have Courtney Krodinger come in to pinch run. A sac bunt from Varriano advanced Krodinger to second. A single into left field from Spencer allowed Krodinger to reach home and give UNI a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Shockers would bring in three runs, after a few bases loaded situations. Wichita State would push across an additional run in the top of the fifth came when Kiersten Otte reached home and closed the gap on UNI's lead, 6-4.
Alyssa Buchanan started a two-out rally in the fifth with a single to right. Pinch hitter Ashley Chesser singled to right to continue the inning and Brittney Krodinger ripped an RBI single to score pinch runner Olivia Brooks to give UNI a 7-4 lead.
Wichita State's Macklin Hitz hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 7-7.
UNI rallied back in the bottom of the sixth starting with Bailey earning a walked and Tianna Drahn pinch running for her. Varriano was hit by a pitch to put two on. Both would advance after an illegal pitch. A sac fly from Spencer brought in Drahn. Bunch then hit a double that brought in Varriano for a 9-7 UNI lead.
Spencer held off the Shockers in the seventh to give UNI the game one victory, 9-7.
GAME TWO
UNI's Alyssa Buchanan started in the circle for game two and held the Shockers scoreless through the opening five innings. Buchanan went the distance for the win to move to 12-2 as she allowed four hits and one run while striking out six Shockers.
Brittney Krodinger led off in the bottom of the first and was hit by the pitch. Brittney Roby promptly followed with an RBI double to give UNI another early 1-0 advantage.
Bunch hit her second home run of the day with a solo shot in the second to push UNI's lead to 2-0.
Ashley Chesser drew a one-out walk in the third and moved to second on a single by Anna Varriano. Kennedy Bailey singled to right center to load the bases. Bunch singled in a run to give UNI a 3-0 lead. Varriano was thrown out trying to score on the Bunch single.
UNI added two more runs in the fourth to up its lead to 5-0. Brittney Krodinger reached on a one-out walk and Roby followed with a single. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. After Macey Wolfe struck out, Ashley Chesser loaded the bases with a base on balls. Varriano padded the lead with a two-RBI double that scored Krodinger and Roby.
Wichita State scored its lone run in the top of the sixth.
Next up for UNI is a three-game series against Illinois State in Normal, Illinois. Saturday May 6 will be a doubleheader at noon and 2:30 p.m., while Sunday May 7 will be a single game at 11 a.m.
