
4X400 Relay Squads Advance To Drake Relays Finals

DES MOINES, Iowa – The UNI track and field team completed in wet and cold conditions the third day of action at the 2017 Drake Relays today, pulling strong performances along with sending two relay teams and Brandon Carnes to the finals of their events tomorrow.
Carnes turned in the fastest 100 meter dash time in the first round race today, posting a 10.16 to advance to tomorrow's finals. The finals of the 100 meters will start at 2:25 p.m. on Saturday.
Jon Rus finished in the top-15 in the men's 110 meter hurdles, placing fourth in his heat with a time of 14.46. Cole Phillips also placed in the top-half of the competition, coming in 15th overall with a time of 14.55.
Lindsey Kite put up a strong performance in the women's 800 meter run, placing sixth overall. She finished with a time of 2:11.47, competing in an open event for the first time at the Drake Relays.
The men's 4X400 meter relay team earned a spot in the finals after taking sixth place in the first round race today. Bryce Newcomb, Brett McCalla, Evan Long and Jacob Smith finished second in their heat with a time of 3:12.67, ranking them first in the Valley heading into the weekend.
The women's 4X400 meter relay team also qualified for tomorrow's finals by finishing eighth overall and third in their heat. The team of Jasmine Blue, Maddie Irmen Lyndsie Schinkel and Maddie Bell finished with a team time of 3:47.49.
The finals of the women's 4X400 meter relay will take place at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday with the men running at 3:52 p.m.
Moving into the field, Brad Walski claimed a top-10 finish out of 25 competitors in the shot put, placing eighth with a toss of 53-5.75. Both Kyler Yodts and Isaac Holtz finished in the top-15 with Yodts earning 11th place with a mark of 51-10.00 and Holtz contributing a throw of 51-7.00 for 13th place.
Hope Koerperich put up a top-five finish for the Panthers in the women's discus, placing fifth overall out of 21 competitors. On her third attempt, Koerperich notched a mark of 155-4.00, the second-best toss of her career.
The Panthers finished the day on the track in the 4X800 meter relay, with the UNI women running the fifth fastest time in school history. Theresa Connelly, Schinkel, Tiffany Christensen and Kite ran a time of 8:55.69 to place fifth overall.
UNI returns to action tomorrow when they take on the final day of the 2017 Drake Relays. The meet gets underway for the Panthers at 9 a.m. on the field and at 9:50 a.m. on the track. Live results for the final day are available here.
