UNI Sits in 3rd After Day One of MVC Championship

LEMONT, Illinois – The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team is in third place following day one of the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championships. The Panthers have four golfers among the top 20 following 36 holes of action.
UNI posted scores of 295-304—599 (+23) at Cog Hill "Dubsdread" Golf Course. The Panthers were in second place following the opening round of play with a score of 295, five shots behind Illinois State for first place. The team is in third place behind Wichita State (1st) and Illinois State (2nd) after two rounds of play.
At this pace, the seventh seeded Panthers are looking to finish in the top-four for the eighth time since joining the MVC in 1991-92.
Senior David Spengler is leading the Panthers through the first day with scores of 71-78--149 (+5) and is tied for seventh place. Spengler was tied for third after opening the tournament with a career-best round of 71. It also marks the first time in his collegiate career at UNI that he broke par in a round. He had three birdies and an eagle in the first round. In the second round, he added two more birdies to his score.
Junior Sam DeBartolo had consistent scores of 75-75--150 (+6) which put him in a tie for 10th place and one shot behind Spengler. He had four birdies in the first day, including three in the first round.
Senior Dustin Atkinson finished the first day of the tournament tied for 13th with scores of 73-78--151 (+7). At the end of the first round, he was tied for fifth, three shots behind first place. Atkinson finished the first round with three birdies and one in the second round.
Also in the top-20 is redshirt sophomore Marshal Lamb, who finished tied for 17th with round scores of 76-76--152 (+8). He moved up from being tied for 19th after the first round. Lamb had three birdies through the first two rounds of the tournament.
Rounding out the team's lineup is sophomore Davis Sutton who is tied for 29th with scores of 81-75--156 (+12). He had an impressive second round that moved him up from a 39th place tie. Sutton had three birdies in the first round and two more in the second round.
Wichita State is leading the MVC Championship through the first day with scores of 296-292--588 (+12), eleven shots ahead of the Panthers. Illinois State is in second place with scores of 290-299--589 (+13). Grant Bennett of Wichita State and defending champion Trent Wallace of Illinois State are leading the player leaderboard with scores of 73-72-145 (+1) and 70-75--145 (+1).
