CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball program participated in the 120,000 Burpee Challenge today to raise awareness for organ donation during National Donate Life Month.Â
Troy, the brother of assistant coach Adam DeJoode, lost two children in a car accident in 2010. The family set up the Carson & Claire Forever Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to maintaining the Carson & Claire memory through community activities supporting education and organ donation.Â
"My brother was faced with a difficult decision that evening to have both of his children be organ donors," DeJoode said. "Their organs were donated to several people, including a heart that went to a three-month-old boy that was within days of not making it. So, the organ donation platform has been huge to my brother and his wife his in spreading awarenes and the message for that cause."
The Panthers did 20 burpees today to support and to raise awareness about organ donation. According to www.DonateLife.net, every 10 minutes, another person is added to the waiting list while one organ, eye and tissue donor can save and heal more than 75 lives.Â
"April is National Donate Life Month, so Troy has put together something through the Carson & Claire Forever Foundation to raise awareness by doing 120,000 burpees," DeJoode said. "120,000 people are the number of people nationwide on the organ donation waiting list, including 702 in Iowa while every day 22 people die waiting for an organ."Â

"Today our women's basketball team did 20 burpees to raise awareness," DeJoode said. "Whether it is one burpee or 300, or 3,000, every one counts toward raising awareness through social media about organ donation. My brother's wish is that everyone take five minutes to read about organ donation and see if the very personal decision is for them. "
