Senior Angie Davison recently spent time at the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four as a part of the WBCA Allstate Good Works Team. She was one of just nine student-athletes from across the country chosen to be a part of the incredible experience.Â
Davison traveled to Dallas, Texas, with the rest of the Good Works Team and participated in a community service project, met with the head of the WBCAÂ and also was honored at halftime of one of the Final Four games. The experience was one that Davison will never forget.
Q: Who did you invite to travel with you to the Final Four?
A:Â My mom went to the Final Four with me because I wanted to spend time with her and I knew she would enjoy it. I also wanted her to come because she also went with my sister, Stephanie, so she would have a better feel of how the events went.Â
Q: Had you ever been to Dallas before?Â
A: I had never been to Dallas before!
Q: What was it like getting to meet the rest of the Good Works Team?
A: I think getting to meet the Good Works Team members was the highlight of my trip. Those girls have such wonderful hearts and I definitely plan to stay in contact with them. It was so awesome to meet a group of female athletes who share the same desires and passions as my own.Â
Q: What was the process like throughout the entire experience?
A: When we arrived in Dallas, we had a meeting about how the weekend would be structured and what was expected of each of us. On Friday, we had the opportunity to attend a FOCUS Friday event where we were recognized and got to listen to Dr. Tim Elmore talk about how to coach the upcoming Gen iY athletes. He was a wonderful speaker and provided great insight on what it takes to be a coach and leader for the upcoming generation of athletes. Friday was also the day we were recognized on the court at the second Final Four game. Saturday we did our service project at Children's Medical Center. On Sunday, many of us attended the morning FCA service where we got to worship God and learn about the importance of being one with your team. My favorite line from the speaker at this service was, "You have to be confident enough with yourself to be happy for other people's success." We then had a group meeting with the executive director of the WBCA, Danielle M. Donehew. In this meeting, we each had the opportunity to practice telling our stories and passions of what drives us in life within a three minute time limit. This exercise was to teach us the importance of being concise and become more comfortable in front of others. Later that day we had a group interview where we answered questions about our community service projects and how our experiences have helped us within our sports. Â
Q: What did you do for the service project?Â
A:Â The service project we did over the weekend was at Children's Medical Center. We first made distraction boxes for the kids who were patients at the hospital. These boxes were filled with fun toys and objects to help the kids pass the time. We also got to write encouraging messages and draw pictures for the kids on the boxes. The second half of our visit to the medical center consisted of a tour and a chance to play some basketball with a few of the patients there. It was so much fun to brighten a couple of kid's days through a sport we all love. The time I spent with the kids at Children's Medical Center was extremely rewarding and will have a lasting affect on me.Â
Q: What was the most rewarding part of the weekend?
A: Spending time with the kids who had to live at the hospital was the most rewarding part of my weekend. These kids came out the toward us looking unsure and a little nervous about trying to shoot hoops with IV's in their arms. However, as soon as we placed a ball in their hands and they made their first shots, their entire image changed. They became alive, excited, and got a chance to forget the reasons why they were there and just be a kid for a couple hours.Â
Q: What was it like getting to meet the head of the WBCA and so many influential voices in women's basketball?
A: Everyone we heard from that weekend was so passionate in what they do and truly inspired each of us. I was moved by the various stories I heard over the weekend and learned a lot of useful tips that I will take with me into my future classrooms as a teacher and with my future teams as a coach.Â
