UNI Selects April Student-Athletes of Month

This months' honorees are Angie Davison (Maple Grove, Minnesota), Jaclyn Spencer (Waterloo, Iowa), Brandon Carnes (Bradenton, Florida) and Max Thomsen (La Porte City, Iowa).
Angie Davison - Women's Basketball
Senior Angie Davison entered the MVC Tournament averaging just 4.3 points per game, but finished the tournament averaging 16.3. The Maple Grove, Minn., native had one of the best outings of her career, achieving career-bests on the way to be named to the MVC All-Tournament Team. She also earned the Elite 18 Award for being the student-athlete with the highest GPA in the championship game. She opened the tournament with 11 points against Bradley, shooting 75-percent from the three-point line. She followed it up with seven made threes in UNI's semifinal win over Evansville, just one shy of tying the UNI record for threes in a game. She scored a career-high 21 points, shooting 53-percent from the arc. In the championship game, Davison notched her first-career double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She hit four more threes against Drake, giving her a total of 14 threes in just three games.Â
Jaclyn Spencer - Softball
Spencer notched a team-high four pitching victories and struck out 43 opposing batters in the month of March. She began the month with a three-hit, 5-1 victory over Tennessee Tech (March 3). Spencer posted 10 strikeouts in an 11-5 win over Oklahoma State (March 5). Spencer tossed a one-hit shutout over Ohio (March 10) as UNI scored an 8-0 win over the Bobcats in Louisville, Kentucky.
Brandon Carnes - Men's Track & Field
Senior Brandon Carnes opened the month of March at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earning second-team All-America honors. He was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Male Track Athlete of the Year after defending his indoor 60 and 200 meter titles at the MVC Championships. He also started his outdoor season with a bang, running the third-fastest times in the country in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the Florida Relays. He ran a time of 10.17 in the 100 meters, breaking the UNI and MVC record of 10.19 that was set by Devon Davis in 2001. In the 200 meters, he ran a wind-aided time of 20.31 that ties his wind-aided PR of 20.31 that he ran in 2016.Â
Max Thomsen - Wrestling
Thomsen earned All-America honors in his first bid to the NCAA tournament. He avenged a loss to No. 10 Justin Oliver at the MAC Championships to take second and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships in the 149-pound weight class. Thomsen had entered the tournament as a No. 3 seed. He continued to improve on his seeding at nationals. The redshirt freshman was seeded seventh heading. He was bumped to the consolations with a 4-2 loss in the semifinals to eventual runner-up Lavion Mayes. A dominating performance over No. 6 Solomon Chishko secured him a fifth-place finish and All-America honors. Thomsen is from La Porte City, Iowa, and majoring in business management. His work in the classroom earned him spots on the Academic All-MAC team and NWCA All-Academic Team. Â
