CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Senior sprinter Brandon Carnes is set to compete at the 2017 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships this week, running March 10-11 in College Station, Texas.
Carnes qualified for the 60 meter dash after running a UNI and Missouri Valley Conference record time of 6.59 at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in January. He will get started on Friday, March 10 in the semifinals at 6:10 p.m.
This is the Bradenton, Fla., native's second trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships after qualifying in the 60 and 200 meter dashes last season. He earned second-team All-America, his third All-America recognition of his career.
Only 16 student-athletes can qualify for an individual event at the Indoor Championships, ensuring that Carnes will be competing against the top athletes in the nation. It comes at the heels of an outstanding indoor season where Carnes broke records and brought home hardware.
He recently was named USTFCCCA Midwest Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year after defending his 60 and 200 meter titles at the MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the end of February. With his wins, he became the first athlete in conference history to win both the 60 and the 200 four consecutive years.
He was also named the MVC Most Outstanding Track Athlete for the second year in a row. Carnes holds 14 individual titles and owns the UNI indoor 60 and 200 meter school records. The senior enters the meet this week tied for third in NCAA Division I track in the 60 meter dash and is currently tied for 22nd in the world.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will be broadcast live on ESPN3, starting at 5:25 p.m. CT on Friday, March 10 and then again at 3:55 p.m. CT on March 11. The finals for the 60 meter dash will be at 4:30 p.m.
