NEW ORLEANS, La. – Senior Brandon Carnes was honored today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association be being named the Division I Midwest Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year.
The regional award comes on the heels of Carnes repeating his individual championships in the 60 meter and 200 meter dashes, becoming the first athlete in Missouri Valley Conference to win both the 60 and 200 four consecutive years.
The Bradenton, Fla. native earned the MVC Most Outstanding Track Athlete honor for the second year in a row at the championship meet, earning his 13th and 14th MVC individual titles. The senior won the 60 meter dash at the MVC Championships with a time of 6.60, narrowly missing his PR time of 6.59, followed by a 21.30 in the 200 meter dash to come away victorious.
Carnes qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row in the 60 meter dash after he ran his career-best time of 6.59 at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in January. The time of 6.59 ranked him in the top-three in the nation and top-10 in the world along with breaking both the UNI and and MVC records.
The senior was also dominant in the 200 meters during the indoor season, claiming the school record at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 11. His time of 21.03 broke the time of 21.15 that was set by Dirk Homewood in 2003.
Carnes is set to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships this week in College Station, Texas. The meet runs March 11-12.
