Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – The University of Northern Iowa softball team faced off in a doubleheader against Indiana State on Saturday.
Indiana State (14-13, 1-4 MVC) took the first game against UNI (15-12, 3-2 MVC) in a 5-4 win that went nine innings.
After Brittney Roby was walked in the top of the first, Macey Wolfe came swinging for the fences and hit a home run into left field. That hit also brought in Roby to give UNI an early 2-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Kennedy Bailey was at bat when Anna Varriano stole second base and Sammey Bunch stole home to extend the Panthers lead to 3-0.Indiana State did not score until the bottom of the fifth inning. They scored two runs to close the gap against UNI to 3-2.
Tianna Drahn came in as pinch hitter in the top of the sixth inning to singled off the very first pitch. Jaci Spencer was at the plate next but led to the Panthers first out for the inning. Sammey Bunch followed Spencer and hit a double straight into center field to bring Drahn home and give the Panthers a 4-2 lead.
The bottom of the seventh was fruitful for the Sycamores as the scored two runs and tied up the game. The tie led to extra innings. It was the bottom of the ninth when Indiana State ultimately took the win in a 5-4 victory.
The second game of the day proved to be victorious for UNI.
Indiana State came into the second game with momentum and scored in the very first inning to give them a 1-0 lead.
The first runs on the board for UNI were in the top of the third. Ashley Chesser was at the plate while Brittney Roby and Sammey Bunch were both on base. Chesser hit a double and was able to bring in both Roby and Bunch to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Sycamores tied up the game at 3-3.
Ashley Chesser gave UNI the victory after a home run in the top of the fifth inning was the final run either team would have.
The Panthers face off against Indiana State for the third game in their series on Sunday at 11 a.m. est / 10 a.m. cst.
