
Panthers Wrap Up Bill Cornell Spring Classic

FINAL RESULTS
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program opened the outdoor season on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic, finishing the day with four individual wins.
Jon Rus finished with the first win of the day for the Panthers in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 14.18. The Panthers swept first through third on the men's side, with Cole Phillips placing second and Daurice Fountain grabbing third.
Lauren Frederick had a full day in the hurdles in Carbondale, competing in both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles. She placed second overall in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.79 while also placing third in the 400 meter hurdles, running it for the first time in her career with a time of 1:06.06.
For the men, UNI placed first and second in the 400 meter hurdles, with Jacob Smith winning the event in 53.49. Carter VonEssen, a true freshman like Smith, finished in second overall with a time of 56.19.
Corey Hertz put in two strong performances in the longer sprints, including a second place finish in the 400 meter dash. His time of 48.45 was the second fastest time in the 400 in his career.
In the middle-distance races, Jordan Pingel finished first overall in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:53.99. For the women, the Panthers notched two top-three finishes in the 800 and 1,500 meters races with Lindsey Kite finishing in second in the 800 with a time of 2:14.76 and Lyndsie Schinkel grabbing a second place showing in the 1,500 with a PR time of 4:35.78.
Kassidy Sharp picked up a win for the Panthers in the field to get things started, winning the women's high jump. She finished the event with a mark of 5-5.25, joined in the top-five by Maria Gonzalez who placed fifth overall with a mark of 5-1.25.
Grabbing UNI's second win in the field was true freshman Allison Griffin in the women's shot put. She threw 45-8.00 on her third attempt of the day for the win.
The Panthers had three student-athletes finish in the top-five in the discus competition today, with Isaac Holtz placing second in the men's event with a mark of 169-1.50 and Evan Colfack placing fifth. On the women's side, Hope Koerperich claimed a third place finish with a personal-best of 155-.750, followed by Sarah Pate in fourth with a toss of 152-6.25.
Pate continued the momentum into the women's hammer throw, coming away with a second place finish. She walked away with a toss of 183-0.75 on her second attempt to claim the top-three finish.
UNI put up strong showings in the relays at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic with the women's and men's 4X100 meter relay teams finishing in the top-three. The women's team of Katie Maschmann, Maddie Bell, Maddie Irmen and Jasmine Blue were able to put together a second place finish with a team time of 47.37 while Raheem Black, Brandon Carnes, Charles Brown and Jacob Smith placed third on the men's side.
The UNI track and field teams will return to action March 30 at the Florida Relays followed by the Husker Spring Invitational on April 8.
