CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell to the Southern Illinois Salukis on Sunday afternoon, 64-59. The Panthers are 16-6 overall this season and 9-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Panthers led the game for 32:01 and by as many as 15 in the second quarter, but the Salukis were able to put together an 8-0 run to end the game and steal the victory from UNI. Southern Illinois was able to shoot 52-percent from the floor in the game, holding the Panthers to just 16-percent in the fourth quarter.
UNI was led in points by Madison Weekly and Ellie Herzberg, who scored 19 and 18 points respectively. All five of Weekly's made field goals were from the three, tying a season-high while Herzberg finished the game 7-for-17 with two rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals. On the boards, Hannah Schonhardt came down with eight while Megan Maahs finished with seven.
Weekly knocked down three of her five three-pointers in the first quarter. The senior helped spark a 7-0 run in the quarter, sending the Panthers into the second up 20-15. The Panthers shot 53-percent from the field and 57-percent from the three in the first quarter, starting the game on a high note.
The runs continued for UNI in the second quarter, going on a 12-2 run late in the period that included a 9-0 run over the last three minutes of the quarter. The big runs proved troublesome for the Salukis, sending SIU into halftime down by 15.
The shooting woes started for the Panthers in the third quarter, shooting 16-percent from the three while Southern Illinois shot 61-percent from the floor. The Salukis were able to go 7-for-8 from the field with 2:29 left in the third quarter, cutting the Panther lead to just eight points.
Southern Illinois tied the score 56-56 with 4:10 left to play in the fourth quarter after clawing back against the Panthers. Yet again, the Salukis high shooting percentage caused problems for the Panthers, who only shot 16-percent in the fourth.
Weekly was able to hit her final three with 2:45 left in the game to give UNI a 59-56 lead, but it would be the last points the Panthers score, going on a scoring drought to run out the game while the Salukis went on their 8-0 run to win the game.
The Panthers will return to action when they host a pair of games in the McLeod Center, starting with a Friday night matchup against Bradley. The game will take place on Feb. 10 for UNI's Play4Kay game at 7 p.m. CT.
