PHIL STEELE FRESHMAN TEAM
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – After a sensational first season at Northern Iowa, the freshmen pair of Isaiah Weston and Xavior Williams were named to the Phil Steele Freshman All-America Team, the outlet announced earlier this week.
UNI now has 17 national All-Americans this season after Weston and Williams' honors, which ties the most since 2015's 17 selections. Weston and Williams also become UNI's first Phil Steele Freshman Team members in program history. Weston was named to the first team, while Williams earned second team laurels.
In 2017, Weston hauled in five touchdowns and 380 yards at wide receiver to rank second and third on the team in both categories. Weston played in all 13 games for UNI, while catching 22 passes. Earlier this season, the freshman earned MVFC All-Newcomer Team honors.
Weston's stellar game against No. 6 USD vaulted the Panthers over the Coyotes as the freshman scored two touchdowns to torch the secondary. Weston earned a career-high 72 yards receiving against FBS-foe Iowa State to begin the season.
Freshman cornerback Williams also turned in a stellar season at UNI, after coming on strong to cap close out the year. The Panther started eight games in 2017, making 30 tackles and picking off four passes. The four interceptions were all in consecutive weeks for Williams. Earlier this week, Williams was named to the HERO Sports All-Freshman team.
In addition to Phil Steele's All-Freshman team, 10 Panthers were named to the postseason All-MVFC All-America team by the publication. Elijah Campbell (first team), Jared Farley (first team), Daurice Fountain (first team), Rickey Neal (first team), Lee Carhart (second team), Adam Reth (second team), Marcus Weymiller (third team), Malcolm Washington (third team), Sam Drysdale (third team) and Sam Kuhter (third team) all claimed All-MVFC All-America honors from the publication.
