ALL-MVFC ACADEMIC TEAM LIST
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa. – Following a stellar season on the field and in the classroom, Northern Iowa placed five Panthers on the Missouri Valley Football Conference's All-Academic teams, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Junior running back and political science major Marcus Weymiller led the way, claiming first team honors after compiling one of the highest GPA's in the conference at 3.96. Senior center and health promotions major Lee Carhart was named to the second team after a 3.78 this season, while the trio of Sam Drysdale (3.72, computer science), Jared Farley (3.34, business management) and Cal Twait (3.73, physical education) each earned honorable mention.
Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions (freshmen are not eligible).
For Farley, the honor is his third at UNI after earning honorable mention in 2016 and being named to the second team in 2015. Twait is now a two-time honoree after earning honorable mention last season. The five honorees were the most for UNI since 2015.
Weymiller, who has earned CoSIDA Academic All-District first-team this season and All-MVFC Honorable mention earlier this week, is UNI's leading rusher with 769 yards this season and eight touchdowns on the ground. Leading the way for Weymiller this season has been Carhart and Twait, who have been anchors at center and left tackle for UNI. Carhart has started every game for UNI at center this season, while Carhart has battled through injuries to start in seven games.
Farley has led the Panther defense in 2017, racking up 112 tackles while also climbing up all-time ranks at UNI to compile 303 total tackles for his career. The senior earned All-MVFC First Team honors earlier in the week. Drysdale has been a steady rock for the Panthers kicking the ball, making 17 field goals this season, which is tied for the 10th most in a season at UNI.
