STATS FCS RELEASE
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – After racking up 109 tackles this season at linebacker, senior Jared Farley was named a STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award finalist, the organization announced on Monday.
The Buchanan Award was first awarded in 1995 and is presented to the FCS defensive player of the year. A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will vote on 25 finalists following the regular season. The Buck Buchanan Award winner will be celebrated at the STATS FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation, scheduled for Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the national championship game.
The Panthers won the award last season, after Karter Schult became the first player in UNI's storied history to claim the honor.
This season, Farley has started all 11 games for the Panthers at middle linebacker to lead the UNI defense. The senior's 109 tackles rank 16th overall in the FCS and second in the MVFC. Farley has also recorded one sack, one quarterback hurry, one interception and two fumble recoveries. Farley's fumble return for a touchdown against Cal Poly netted the linebacker MVFC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Farley was also named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy earlier this season, an award UNI's Schult was a finalist for last season.
