Lane Named MVFC Newcomer of the Week

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – After a timely fumble recovery late against Southern Illinois on Saturday, Northern Iowa's Suni Lane has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced on Sunday.

The true freshman made four solo tackles and assisted on three to total seven against the Salukis. The last UNI player to win the award was Aaron Bailey, who was named the MVFC Co-Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 15, 2015.

"I'm very honored to earn this award," Lane said. "I have a great group of teammates and coaches that have helped me every step of the way. Without them this honor wouldn't be possible and I want to thank them for giving me the opportunity."

Three SIU scoring threats were halted by the UNI defense after the Panthers forced three turnovers. Korby Sander forced the first as Lane scooped up the fumble early in the fourth quarter, while Jake Hartford and Malcolm Washington made back-to-back picks to put the nail in the coffin.

Lane has started in back-to-back games for the Panthers, with the Bettendorf, Iowa native playing free safety. The true freshman has recorded 17 total tackles (seven in back-to-back games) and has one pass breakup.

Lane and the UNI defense has earned at least one turnover in the last 13 games, with back-to-back games of multiple turnovers.
