
Panthers Stop The Sycamores, 59-47

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team picked up a 59-47 win over Indiana State, scoring its 100th win inside the McLeod Center. UNI improved to 14-4 overall and 7-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Sophomore Ellie Herzberg scored a career-high and game-high 23 points against the Sycamores, shooting 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-8 from the arc. Madison Weekly added 15 points and six assists while Megan Maahs led the Panthers in boards with eight.
The Panthers trailed in the first quarter after going cold from the three, going 0-of-5 from distance. UNI held a one-point game with 45 seconds left in the first quarter, but Ashley Taia hit a jumper with 33 seconds remaining to head into the second quarter up 11-10.
The Sycamores jumped out to a four-point lead to start the third quarter, but Weekly and Maahs teamed up for a pair of layups to quickly tie the score 14-14 with 4:51 on the clock. Herzberg added a key three-pointer to give UNI a three-point lead, followed by a jumper from Mikaela Morgan with 3:27 left in the period to put UNI up 19-14. Indiana State was able to claw back, scoring a layup at the buzzer to send UNI into halftime only ahead 23-20.
UNI continued to push the Sycamores back, forcing five turnovers in the third quarter with suffocating defense. The Panthers were then able to take a nine-point lead on an 8-0 run, sparked by back-to-back threes from Herzberg and Hillyard. UNI was able to hold a 37-32 lead heading into the final quarter, outscoring the Sycamores 10-0 in bench points in the third.
Defense continued to play a key role for the Panthers in the fourth quarter, holding Indiana State to zero three-point attempts. Herzberg scored 11 of her 23 points in the final quarter, going 3-for-4 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from deep. Despite the Sycamores shooting 57-percent in the fourth quarter, the Panthers kept their composure down the line, shooting 90-percent from the charity stripe to seal its 59-47 win.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Jan. 22 when they host Loyola for Alumni Day. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tip inside the McLeod Center.
