Panthers Set To Open Season At Hawkeye Invite

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program is set to kick off its indoor season at the Hawkeye Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 14, hosted by the University of Iowa.
The meet will be held in the Iowa Recreation Building in Iowa City. Events will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the shot put and high jump, followed by a 2 p.m. start on the track with the 60 meter hurdles.
The Panthers will take the whole squad with them to the Hawkeye Challenge with 42 men and 38 women set to take part in the meet. UNI will be competing against student-athletes from Iowa, Iowa State, MVC foe Drake, South Dakota, Western Illinois, Iowa Central and Iowa Western.
Panther fans well get to see a variety of new faces with 38 newcomers seeing their first action in the Purple and Old Gold. The 2017 track and field team will have a balance of youth and experience this season, also returning some key point providers from last year's MVC Indoor Championships.
Senior Brandon Carnes will headline the Panthers this season after another standout season in 2016. The Bradenton, Fla., native is now a 12-time MVC title winner and two-time MVC Meet MVP.
UNI saw 12 school records fall during the 2016 season, setting up what will be an exciting 2017. UNI also broke three Missouri Valley Conference records along with earning 14 all-conference selections in 18 events and three relays.
Head coach Dave Paulsen is in his second year at the helm of the program and is in his ninth year overall at his alma mater. Under his direction, Paulsen has seen student-athletes set 31 school records, take home 28 MVC individual titles and has had 16 NCAA qualifiers.
