9/28/2016 12:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
University of Northern Iowa head men's basketball coach Ben Jacobson has finalized the Panthers' 2016-17 schedule with the addition of an exhibition game and a home regular-season contest in the McLeod Center.
UNI will play a home exhibition game Fri., Oct. 28, in the McLeod Center against Bemidji State. Tip will be set for 7 p.m. for the matchup against the Beavers. Bemidji State head coach Mike Boschee and Jacobson were teammates at the University of North Dakota. UNI defeated Bemidji State in an exhibition game prior to the 2014-15 season, 64-45.
The Panthers will open the regular season at home Sat., Nov. 12, against Coe College at 11 a.m. in the McLeod Center. UNI and Coe last met in the 2014-15 season when the Panthers scored an 86-52 victory over the Kohawks. It will be the 36th meeting between the two schools.
UNI returns five letterwinners and two starters for the 2016-17 season. UNI's roster will feature 11 players (seven newcomers; four redshirts) who have yet to play a game in the McLeod Center.
Senior guard Jeremy Morgan is UNI's top returning scorer (11.3 ppg). Morgan scored the most points ever for a UNI player in an NCAA Tournament game with 36 points vs. Texas A&M. Morgan earned honorable mention All-MVC honors last season. Junior forward Bennett Koch earned a spot on the MVC's Most Improved Team after averaging 7.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest. Junior guard Wyatt Lohaus averaged 4.0 ppg and shot 77.8 percent from the foul line in 2015-16. Junior forward Klint Carlson landed a spot on the MVC's All-Bench Team after scoring 7.4 ppg to go along with 3.6 rebounds per contest. Junior Ted Friedman saw action in all 36 games in 2015-16 after redshirting the previous season.
UNI is one of 13 teams to have won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament and accumulate 54 combined wins over the past two seasons (UNI, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oregon, Villanova, Wichita State, Wisconsin and Virginia).
The Panthers captured the program's fifth Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title with a 56-54 win over Evansville in St. Louis. UNI advanced to the school's eighth NCAA Tournament. It also marked the seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2004 – the most for any MVC school in that time frame. UNI scored the program's fifth NCAA Tournament victory with a 75-72 triumph over No. 6-seeded Texas in a first round game in Oklahoma City. The Panthers have won their first round game in each of their last three NCAA Tournament appearances.
UNI has had 12 20-win seasons in program history – 10 of those 20-win seasons have come since 2003-04. UNI has won 11 or more home games in the McLeod Center in nine consecutive seasons.
