UNI Tennis Competes at Gopher Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS--The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team started action on Friday. at the Gopher Invitational. The Panthers went 3-3 in singles play and 1-2 in doubles.

Doubles Action

Astrid Santos and Gisela Kemper won both of their doubles matches. The first victory was over Yelazco and Crum of South Dakota, 6-1. Santos and Kemper would also post a 7-6 (4) victory of Timakova and Alvarez of Iowa State.

Jieke Stroobant and Elvira Lopez were defeated by Kreinis and Emme of Minnesota 6-1. The UNI duo would win their next match against Tokar and Tormos over Marquette, 7-5.

Sydney Wolfe and Savanna Hunt lost both of their matches. Bender and Freeman of Iowa State defeated the UNI pair, 7-6 (5). Hill and Wilson of Nebraska-Omaha would deliver the second loss, 6-1.

Singles Action

Savanna Hunt was knocked out in the quarterfinals of her bracket. Hunt posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory of Zorka Sara Sviben of South Dakota State before falling to Alysse Nakasato of North Dakota, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Elvira Lopez would win her first singles match against Kelsey Grambeau of Wisconsin, 7-5, 6-3, before falling to Maty Cancini of Iowa State, 6-3, 6-2.

Gisela Kemper would defeat Anna Veleva of Eastern Michigan in the first round 7-5, 6-4. Kemper would be stopped by Tamara Culibrk of San Jose State by a score of 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 14-12.

Jieke Stroobant lost to Tina Breinis of Minnesota, 6-1, 6-1. Stroobant would also fall to Sydney Rider of Wisconsin, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8.

Astrid Santos fell to Cammy Frei of Minnesota 6-4, 7-5. Santos received a bye in the next round of the tournament and will play Janelle Wilson of Nebraska-Omaha Saturday.

Sydney Wolfe would fall to Karen Alvarez of Iowa State, 6-3, 6-1. Wolfe would defeat Nicole Clarke of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 5-7, 6-3, 10-5.
