Panthers Win MVC Opener, Beat Bears 1-0

WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team defeated the Missouri State Bears 1-0 Friday night, opening conference play on the right foot.
The Panthers, who have yet to lose at home this season, faced stiff competition and conditions in this match-up. Winds exceeded 15 mph and affected the game in the early portions. Play flowed fast and was back and forth with the Panthers registering seven shots in the first half.
The Panthers found their breakthrough less than a minute into the second half. Sydney Hayden cut the ball back on to her right foot just outside the 18 yard box and fired a goal into the lower right corner.
Hayden led the Panthers with three shots on target, followed by Hannah McDevitt with two, and Brynell Yount and Sarah Brandt both registering one.
In goal for the Panthers was Maddie Lesjak who continued her strong performance of late, securing the shutout while contributing three saves.
The Panthers look to continue their unbeaten home streak 1 p.m. Sunday against Viterbo. Live stats will be available via UNI athletics.
