9/22/2016 10:38:00 AM | Cross Country
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa cross country program gets back in action tomorrow, Sept. 23 when they take on the Badger Classic in Madison, Wis.
Both the men and the women will be running a 6K with the women racing at 5 p.m. and the men to follow at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers return to action after taking a two-week break since opening the season at the Hawkeye Invitational on Sept. 2.
The men competed in a 6,000 meter race at the Hawkeye Invitational with the women running a 3K. Senior Kelsey Kirchoff will get her first crack at the distance on Friday after running the second fastest time in school history (21:01) the 6K in 2015.
The Panthers had a strong showing on both the men's and women's side to start the season, especially from the youth on the team. In the women's 3K, true freshman Hannah Truniger finished in the top-10 in eighth with Ashley Norem scoring UNI's highest finish in fifth place overall.
On the men's side, Bailey Wetherell led the Panthers, putting together a strong race to finish 18th. The youth shined through for the men as well, with freshman CJ May coming in 38th place in his first collegiate race.
The Badger Invite will be run on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison. Fans wishing to follow along with the action on Friday can follow UNI on twitter (@UNITrackFieldXC). A full set of results and a recap of the day's events will be available on www.UNIPanthers.com following the completion of the meet.
