Cross Country To Compete At Hawkeye Invite

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa cross country program will start its 2016 season in Iowa City on Friday, Sept. 2 when they take on the Hawkeye Invitational.
The meet is set to start at 6 p.m. at the Ashton Cross Country Cross with the women's running a 3,000 meter race and the men starting at 6:45 p.m. with their 6K. The Panther women will have nine athletes competing with the men bringing 10.
UNI will introduce a youthful group to Panther fans this fall with 13 freshmen on the roster that will bring a spark and depth to an already talented squad.
On the women's side, senior Kelsey Kirchoff will headline the Panthers after coming off the 2015 season where she earned a top-15 finish at the MVC Championships. The Denver, Iowa native holds the No. 2 time in UNI history in the 6K and the No. 4 time in the 5K after a standout junior campaign.
For the men, the Panthers return five athletes that have seen competition in regular season meets, including junior Bailey Wetherell. He is coming off a year where he recorded his strongest finish at an MVC meet, placing 35th overall.
Although he won't compete tomorrow, UNI will also see the return of senior Zach Buchheit this season, an all-conference runner from 2014. He currently holds two of the best times in UNI history on the cross country course, ranking No. 8 in the 8,000 and No. 8 in the 10K.
UNI has four regular season meets before the season culminates on Oct. 29 when the Panthers host the MVC Championships in Cedar Falls at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.
