CHICAGO, Ill. – Senior defensive lineman Karter Schult has been named to the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year Award Watch List, it was announced today.
Schult is one of 11 defensive ends on the watch list that is comprised of 22 student-athletes from across the country. The Tripoli, Iowa, native is also one of five players representing the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the most from one league on the list.
The STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year Watch List can undergo revision during the 2016 season. A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will vote on the winner following the regular season.
Schult had a standout junior season and is looking forward to getting his senior campaign started. He finished 2015 as an All-American on and off the field, earning STATS All-America second-team and CoSIDA Academic All-America first-team honors.
He posted a school record 22.5 tackles for loss last season, adding 14 sacks to be ranked first in the MVFC in both categories. He also had high rankings in the FCS, landing at No. 7 and No. 15 in sacks and tackles for loss after leading a UNI defense that kept opposing rushers at bay with a No. 18 ranked rushing defense.
Schult and the Panthers get the 2016 season started on Saturday, Sep. 3 in Ames as they take on the Iowa State Cyclones. The game is set for a 7 p.m. CT kick on Cyclone.TV.
