UNI Takes 2nd at Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team took home second-place honors at the 2016 Michigan Invitational.Â
The Michigan Wolverines (3-0 overall) scored a 3-0 win over the Panthers in the championship match on Saturday night. Michigan won by set scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-21.
In the opening set, Michigan opened up a 19-12 lead only to see UNI storm back with a 9-2 run to knot the set at 21-21. However, Michigan was able to score the final four points of the set and take a 1-0 lead, 25-21. Michigan took advantage of a .389 hitting percentage with 15 kills and one error in the first set.
UNI held a 4-1 advantage early in the second set. Michigan used a 6-2 spurt to take a 7-6 lead it would not relinquish en route to a 25-20 win.
Michigan was cruising with a 17-9 lead midway through the final set before UNI made it interesting. The Panthers went on a 10-4 run to cut the Michigan lead to 21-19. But the home squad was able to close out the third set, 25-21.
UNI sophomore Bri Weber recorded a team-high 13 kills. Senior Amie Held notched a team-best 15 digs. Heather Hook secured 35 assists.
Following the final match, UNI's Held and Kayla Haneline were named to the Michigan Invitational All-Tournament team.
UNI will be back in action next weekend at the USC Radisson Classic in Los Angeles, Calif. UNI will play Creighton on Friday at 7 p.m. (CT). The Panthers will match up with USC (noon) and Kentucky (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
