ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball program was recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) today for their outstanding achievements in the classroom, ranking No. 8 in the WBCA Academic Top 25 Division I Team Honor Roll.
UNI achieved a team GPA of 3.565 during the 2015-16 school year to finish in the WBCA Top-25 for the fifth consecutive season. The Panthers' No. 8 rank is the 13th time in program history that the Panthers have finished inside the top-15 and the eighth time under the direction of head coach Tanya Warren.
"We couldn't be more proud to see our ladies match what they did on the court with a championship effort in the classroom," Warren said. "Our motto is building champions for life and our 2015-16 team embraced this in every aspect.
The Panthers represent the Missouri Valley Conference on this year's Top 25 honor roll, a list of teams recognized in NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA and junior college that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2015-16 season is the 21st in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
The 2016 regular season conference champions finished last season with four players earning MVC Scholar-Athlete honors, including Madison Weekly who was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year. With Warren at the helm, the Panthers have had 20 MVC Scholar-Athlete selections, including seven to the first-team and three MVPs awarded.
After coming off its seventh straight season with 17-plus wins and its sixth postseason appearance in the last seven years, UNI will open the 2016-17 season with an exhibition game against Maryville University on Nov. 7 in the McLeod Center at 7 p.m.
