WATERLOO, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team opened its home campaign Tuesday night hosting Minnesota State-Mankato in an exhibition match, tying 1-1.
The Panthers and Mavericks played three, 30 minute periods, featuring two teams that were evenly matched. In a very up and down game, shots came in bunches. UNI ended the match with eight shots, including two on goal from both Sarah Brandt and Sydney Hayden. Kelsey Hansen, Michelle Austin, Jamie Althiser and Camille Dela Cruz each got one shot off as well.
The Mavericks opened scoring in the 45th minute of the game when Dakota Wendell put one past the Panther keeper, but the lead was short lived. UNI quickly answered as Michelle Austin equalized within a minute with a low, hard shot off the left post that found the back of the net to make the score 1-1.
The Panthers will open regular season play this Friday, Aug. 19 at North Dakota. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
